Team Lingzi for the 2018 Boston Marathon
BOSTON, Massachusetts (January 26, 2018) — Twelve runners from as far away as China will run the 2018 Boston Marathon in support of the Lingzi Foundation, a nonprofit named for Lu Lingzi, the 23-year-old Boston University student killed in the 2013 terrorist attack on the event.
The team is the largest in the foundation’s five-year history, with runners aiming to raise $90,000 to benefit the nonprofit’s various partner organizations. Lingzi’s parents, who live in China, plan to travel to Boston to observe events commemorating the fifth anniversary of the attack — and to show thanks for the work so many have done on their daughter’s behalf.
“We are humbled, grateful and inspired that for the past five years, the Foundation has received continuing support from so many people,” said Jinyan “Helen” Zhoa, Lingzi’s aunt and a member of the foundation’s board of directors. “With their help, we feel confident that we can keep our promise to keep Lingzi’s spirit alive.”
Runners from this year’s team have organized several events to meet their fundraising goals, including:
- Benefit concert: The band Flannel City will perform at Article 24 in Brighton, Massachusetts on Feb. 2
- Spin Class: This will take place at B/SPOKE in Boston, Massachusetts on Feb. 3.
- Trivia Night: This will take place at Gannon Golf Club in Lynn, Massachusetts on Feb. 17.
- 5K Race: The Lingzi Loop 5K Road Race takes place March 31 in Lynn, Massachusetts.
Lingzi’s family formed the foundation to preserve and perpetuate the way she lived — with joy, compassion, a strong work ethic and a sense of appreciation for the beauty of the natural world.
Guided by Lingzi’s positive spirit, the foundation supports organizations such as the Boston Police Athletic League, which helps children develop through education, athletics and social activities, and the One World Strong Foundation, which offers mentoring to survivors of terror.
With an increase in fundraising from this year’s marathon, the foundation plans to continue its support of these organizations and form new partnerships with groups making an impact in the local and global community.
